Addressing the difficulty Catholic priests globally are having in hearing confessions of individual persons affected by the highly contagious coronavirus and with limits on people leaving their home, the Vatican issued a notice saying that it is acceptable for bishops to offer general absolution to groups of people as deemed necessary. The Apostolic Penitentiary stated that while individual confession and absolution is the normal means for the forgiveness of sins, “grave necessity” can lead to other solutions.
